Ai Lao singing and dancing is a traditional rite, only takes place in Giong festival – the village of Phu Dong, Gia Lam district, Hanoi but by Ai Lao Ward (similar to a union) in the village of Hoi Xa, Phuc Loi ward, Long Bien district.

Ai Lao dancing and singing is a unique folk art, the lyrics is in a special beat which has high humane and bring peace aspirations of the nation.
The researcher Cao Huy Dinh, who have studied a lot of Ai Lao singing and dancing identified that the two words “Ai” and “Lao” according to ancient Chinese letter means forcing cattle. Therefore, the kids of Hoi Xa village forcing buffalo and cow who went with Saint Giong to fight the enemy are called Ai Lao ward.
The importance of Ai Lao singing and dancing in Giong festival
At the Giong festival in Phu Dong Temple in March of the lunar calendar, Ai Lao dancing and singing is considered to be one of the important rituals. Mr Hoang Ho and Ai Lao ward is a troop representing for synthetic army, who have united as one to defeat the invaders.
